Bear Show Attendance

Attention, all you hand-wringing hipsters out there, Jay-Z doesn’t understand why you were so shocked to see him at the Grizzly Bear show on Sunday. After all, if his back catalog is proof of anything, it’s that Jigga’s taste in music isn’t strictly limited to hip-hop.

“I don’t understand why people are always surprised to see me at shows!” Jay told MTV News on Monday (August 31). “I’ve always said that I believe in good music and bad music, so I’m always at those type of events. I like music. The second Blueprint, the reason it was so all over the place was because I love music so much, so there’s records on there with Lenny Kravitz and Sean Paul and Dr. Dre. I’ve done records with Chris Martin. I’m all over the place because of my taste in music.”

“They’re an incredible band,” he said. “The thing I want to say to everyone — I hope this happens because it will push rap, it will push hip-hop to go even further — what the indie-rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring. It felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, they’re not on the radio, no one hears about them, and there’s 12,000 people in attendance. And the music that they’re making and the connection they’re making to people is really inspiring. So, I hope that they have a run where they push hip-hop back a little bit, so it will force hip-hop to fight to make better music, because it can happen, because that’s what rap did to rock.”

50 Cent Talks About ‘40 Day’ Cancellation

50 Cent has targeted a lot of foes in his rhymes, but the G-Unit leader won’t be adding Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the list anytime soon. The rapper postponed his 40 Day event scheduled for Sunday (August 30) in Queens, New York, when he was unable to obtain a permit from the city for the picnic. The process hit a snag after the New York Post quoted anonymous sources saying the New York Police Department had concerns over the rapper’s involvement.

Despite meeting with the New York mayor to squelch any concerns, 50 was unable to pull the event off. “People will point to Bloomberg and immediately think that I would be upset with Mayor Bloomberg or the governor, and both of them wanted me to have the actual event,” 50 told MTV News.

The problem, according to 50, was that city officials didn’t want him to publicize the festivities, fearing an overly large turnout would be difficult to manage. But before he could assure Bloomberg that safety wouldn’t be a problem, the Post ran an article making the private negotiations public.

“They told me not to promote the event, and then it got national coverage. Then the fear factor comes in,” 50 explained. “Can you control 100,000 people being in your neighborhood? ‘Cause you might not be sure of a turnout at an actual venue, but in the neighborhood, everyone is gonna show up.”

It would be easy to blame Bloomberg, 50 said, but ultimately, the mayor has to listen to his advisers. “He’s gonna look at the police commissioner and ask, ‘Is this gonna be a safe situation?’ ” 50 said. “And if they tell him no, then it’s not gonna happen.”

Fif, however, chided the Post for stirring up controversy. “Why are they reporting [about] an event that hasn’t taken place yet?” he asked. “Did no one get killed that day? Did no accidents happen that day? Why are they so interested? Because they know they can sell newspapers that way.”

Raekwon Speaks On East vs. West Era

When the West Coast/East Coast beef manifest its self at The Source Awards, two fractions on the East Coast were warring as well. Although, mere words ignited the beef, violence almost played a part in fatally ending it between Wu-Tang and Biggie Small and his Brooklyn goons.

Raekwon opens up to reveal that he constructed a fake cast to wear to The Source Awards to avoid detection from from a gun that would be secretly hidden in his surgically wrapped hand.

After contemplating his intended actions, the Chef had a change of heart and attend the award show unarmed. Years later the iconic rapper & Wu-Tang front man squashed the beef before Biggie was actually gunned down on the West Coast.

Jay-Z Wants To ‘Leave A Footprint’ In Hollywood

“Hollywood” isn’t just the name of a Jay-Z song — Hov still wants to get into the movie biz. Before he retired for the first time about six years ago, Jay said one of the things he wanted to focus on after rapping was making movies. Well, obviously even when he was in “retirement,” Jay never stopped rapping — it’s in the man’s DNA. Still, the Jiggaman told us he hasn’t given up laying down a blueprint for success in Tinseltown.

“I do. I do,” Jay insisted about whether he still wants to make movies in the future. “I’m taking my time. It may seem like it’s taking forever, but when I do, it’s gonna be something added to the genre. I just don’t wanna do a couple movies and be gone. I want it to be something that’s really important, so I’m taking my time with it. Hopefully when I arrive [in Hollywood], I can leave a footprint.”

Hell Rell Presents: Hell’s Kitchen - Live From Hell Episode 1

Q-Tip Blasts Mayor Bloomberg Over "40 Day"

"50 Cent is a success story we all should applaud. However you feel about him, you can't deny him. He had something going on in his old neighborhood — our old neighborhood, because I grew up there too. He wanted to perform there. He can have the benefit but he can't perform."

"I think that's a shot to morale," he continued. "It's a shot to somebody's morale, who's 15 or 16 years old. That's an impressionable soul who sees 50 Cent, how he's not able to see him perform in a way. I think the [city's officials] are aware, but they think [50's] performance may cause rabble-rousing, or get people to act out. That's just an old way of thinking about folk, especially black folk. That's what it all boils down to, essentially."

Young Jeezy Wants To Make His Own ‘Hood’s Hottest MCs’ List

Young recently told us he has his own ideas for the Hottest MCs list, saying that we should make a “Hood’s Hottest MCs” of the realest street cats in the game. He would even like to sit down with some of his rap friends and make up a list.

“Even with me, when y’all first put in the bracket, some people think different,” he explained. “Some people wanna be a lyricist. Me, I wanna be real. It’s gotta be different categories.”

Jeezy does agree you could be real and not be hot. “You can,” Young noted. “There’s a lot of cats that do. You gotta get that list though. There’s a lot of cats underground you might not even know about that everybody listens to.”

Jeezy also notes that when the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust makes their Hottest list, they shouldn’t include legends against some of the younger artists.

“You shouldn’t put a Nas on there. Or a KRS-One. That’s crazy to put those cats in the same category. They think differently. That’s why we should do mine. … It’s gonna cause more controversy than you think. People gonna be calling being like, ‘He ain’t really like that.’ ”

Drake feat. Trey Songz - Successful (30sec Preview)

It’s not exactly a do-over, but after receiving some backlash from his “Best I Ever Had” video, Drake tones things down in a clip for “Successful.”

The video was shot in the rapper’s hometown of Toronto. Drake and Trey Songz share top billing throughout the clip, directed by Jake Davis. Lil Wayne is featured in the original version of the song from Drake’s mixtape So Far Gone, but in the video version, Weezy’s verse has been replaced with a sung verse from Songz.

The clip is dark and opens with Drake overlooking the city. He continues to peer out from the balcony of a building during his first verse until he meets with Trey. As the two exit the condo, Drake turns back to the doorman, and his mind flashes as he and the man switch roles. The mood of the video matches the song; “Best I Ever Had” turned out to be a misstep for the upstart MC when the over-the-top clip didn’t match what fans felt the song portrayed.

Jay-Z Recalls How Record Labels Thought He Was ‘Terrible’

“I went to every single record label, and they was like, ‘This guy is terrible. He’s nothing,’ ” Jay told MTV News prior to the release of The Blueprint in 2001. “I had to put [Reasonable Doubt] out myself, because nobody would sign me.”

That was back in 1996, when Roc-A-Fella records was born, not out of entrepreneurial expansion but, as Hova made clear, out of necessity. “I would press up singles and go to the record stores myself, collect $100, $200, come back, give them some more records,” he recalled. “It started like that.”

Jay wasn’t embittered by his struggle, though. If anything, it gave him a sharper perspective on the music business. “It made me appreciate it so much more,” he said. “No one gave me anything. They didn’t give me a record deal. I really just took my time and grew it step by step by step by step. I could have easily been like, ‘Maybe what I’m talking about ain’t right! Nobody wants to sign me!’ That would have stopped the suffering. But I didn’t.”

Raekwon Talks Nas’ No-Show On OB4CL2

We heard the album last night, son. Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II is a certified gem. That very last song on the LP, “Kiss the Ring,” is amazing. He’s has those mafia war stories, the sharp wordplay, Wu-Bangers and even some Dr. Dre G-Funk. What the Chef was unable to get was Nas. One of the main show-stealers from the original Only Built 4 Cuban Linx never gave Rae a verse for the new LP. So much for nostalgia.

“He committed to it,” Rae told Mixtape Daily. “I knew dude be busy. However it goes down, it’s cool with me. My thing is, I sacrificed to even ask because of the fans. But if dudes be too busy in their own minds, they don’t have to do it. Because Rae continues to do Rae anyway. Y’all came to see me. It’s the Rae show anyway.”

The Chef does have a couple of non-Wu-Tang castmembers — Beanie Sigel and The Lox’s Jadakiss and Styles P — participating on the CD. “I had to go back and deal with brothers I felt was really next to me, like a Sigel,” Chef said. “The way he came across, y’all gonna know he’s nothing to play with. He’s a vicious MC. When me and him get on a track, everybody gotta sit down. I got Kiss on the album. He’s like another one of me. I’m like him. We seen the same things. We share the same stories. I’m just a little older than Kiss, but we’re compatible. I wanted to keep it real Cuban, where people be like, ‘That’s how they talk.’ Jeezy would have been a good dude for the album, but maybe I’ll get him for [Cuban Linx III]. I wanted to keep it light on the features. I didn’t want everybody to [feel] like I’m looking too hard and leaning on features. I put Wu all over the joints because that’s how we made the first one.” According to Rae’s camp, he definitely has enough quality material to put out an Only Built 4 Cuban Linx III at the top of the year.

CRITICISM OF “D.O.A.”:
“I’m not hating on young people. Like, when people say that, I’m like, What are you talking about? It’s just stupid. I’m not hating on young people… I’m not Bill Russell, [saying] Michael Jordan ain’t shit. I’m saying Lil Wayne and Kanye are like LeBron and Kobe. My job as someone at the forefront of the game is to leave it in a better position than when I came in. Same way that Russell [Simmons] left it to me. ’Cause this thing saved my life. Literally. So I have a responsibility to it karmically. And after that it’s on you. I did my part. I made ‘D.O.A.’ I said it. I made the statement. I made the push. Here, y’all take it from here.”

HIS LEGACY AS FORMER DEF JAM RECORDS PRESIDENT:
“So if you ask me to grade my performance as the president, I’d say A-plus. No one can bat a 100. It’s impossible. I mean, everyone is looking at my shit. But if we really looked under the hood [of] every single [record exec] and the acts they put out in that time, I’d be comparable to anyone.”

HIS STANDING IN THE GAME:
“But when I say I’m the best, I don’t say that outta my ass. I say that with all my stats behind me. I put that against anybody. I mean anybody. I really believe that… I believe in a lot of things.
I believe that ‘SportsCenter’ is the best thing on TV. I shouldn’t have to prove it. But I do have these stats to prove it. I’m talking about real run. I’m not talking about years off. I’m talking about straight—boom, boom, boom—back to back. We’re not talking about heritage acts either. We’re not talking about respect what I’ve done. I’m talking No. 1 [albums] 10 times. The Beatles is the only one [to have more
No. 1 albums]. They got 19, and if I get a surge of creativity, I could make nine albums next year.”

He's got a different flow from Jay-Z, but lyrics-wise, he's got it. He's a lyricist. Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, I don't care who comes third. These guys have the whole place on edge, man. It's hot."

Back in 2005, I interviewed Weezy while he was "enrolled" at University of Houston for XXL. Wonder who's going to be the first sign to Young Money Sports.

Tony Yayo x DJ Drama Talk Gangsta Paradise

“You hear my mixtapes on ThisIs50 and you hear them with DJ Whoo Kid,” Yayo explained. “I wanted to go out of my element this time. It was like, ‘Who should I go to? DJ Drama.’ Atlanta is poppin’, New York City’s poppin’, everywhere is poppin’ — but I had to go to Gangsta Grillz. [Mastermind DJ Drama] paved the way for a lot of artists. He’s the hottest DJ to go to. Shout out to Whoo Kid, but I did this one with Drama this time.”

“Reason I call it Gangsta Paradise is because the gangstas in Queens call it ‘gangsta’s paradise.’ Brooklyn is the jungle. That’s the name of Queens — shout to Southside Jamaica. I’ve been dropping a lot of mixtapes on my own, learning from 50. I think I’m starting to get the game mastered. It takes some time. Swine Flu, Swine Flu 2: The Pandemic, Public Enemies. Now I got Gangsta Paradise. Shout to Willie the Kid and La the Darkman. The video is crazy. Real recognize real.”

Yayo and Dram are hopeful that they can knock out a full G-Unit Gangsta Grillz once 50 finishes filming his latest movie.
